Most improving players don’t need to play more. They need to fix the right things.

As the South Downs Pickleball Coach, I help players identify and correct the most common (and costly) basic errors that stop them progressing.

The 4 Most Common Improver Mistakes

1️⃣ Missing Balls that you really should be able to get

Often caused by:

  • Poor court positioning

  • Late preparation

  • Paddle too low

  • Watching where you want to hit instead of watching the ball

How I help:

We work on ready position, early paddle prep, and simple movement patterns that dramatically improve consistency. Small adjustments = big results.

2️⃣ Hitting the Ball Out of Bounds

Usually a control issue — not a power issue.

Common causes:

  • Trying to finish points too early

  • Poor weight transfer

  • Incorrect paddle angle

  • Lack of shot selection awareness

How I help:

I teach you how to build points properly. You'll learn margin, placement, and when to attack — so you win more rallies without overhitting.

3️⃣ Volleying in the Kitchen (Non-Volley Zone Faults)

One of the most frequent rule-based errors improvers make.

Common problems:

  • Not understanding momentum into the NVZ

  • Leaning instead of setting feet

  • Poor balance at the line

How I help:

We train controlled footwork and balance at the kitchen line, so you stay legal, stable and dominant in hand battles.

4️⃣ Poor Paddle Grip & Technique

Grip mistakes quietly sabotage everything.

Signs:

  • Inconsistent contact

  • Weak volleys

  • Lack of control on dinks

  • Arm fatigue

How I help:

I assess and refine your grip, paddle angle and swing mechanics so you gain control without tension. Most players feel immediate improvement.
